I want to take out a secure loan thru credit union to end debt, but is it better to have 1 loan on credit.?

I want to know if it is better to take out a loan and consolidate debt on credit report or have several open accounts with high balances.

Loan, car payment, furniture bill, cell phone bills those things are never bad to have on your credit report, it's what is said after the item that makes all the difference in the world, paid on time, never late, paid on time with no balance.
